REVIEW-HOUSE PARTY(2023)
Ok, so it's officially been 24 hours since I've watched the remake of House Party. Immediately leaving the theater, I was smiling from ear to ear with satisfaction. I was smiling mostly because my 90s inner kid was full.
This film paid homage to the original House Party in a way that was very tasteful without trying too hard.
Lots of people will have their opinions about this film and hold it directly up to the original, but I don't think that's necessary because House Party 2023 isn't trying to take the place of the original, it's just telling a similar story about friendship and bad decisions that work out in the end. This film was funny without trying to be funny, and I could tell by the bloopers shown at the end, that the cast had a great time filming.
What I Liked:
I told myself that I would not compare this film to the original 1990 House Party, and just view it with an open mind, but I couldn't help but to watch and wait for the call backs to the original. I like that this film gave younger millennials, like myself a subtle nod back to the classic that we all know and love. Every time this film gave a subtle nod to the original, it felt like they were giving us viewers a "wink and the gun".
Although this film has its similarities to the original, it's very clear from the beginning that this film is NOT trying to replace it. The core theme that's consistent with both films is no matter what the party must go on! The chemistry between Kid 'n' Play back in the day can be seen today thru Kevin and Damon's characters. Kevin is the logical one, while Damon is the charismatic playboy. One thing I can say is that in this version of House Party, the player definitely stole the show for me!
What I Didn't Like:
Even though I liked so many moments in this film, I did feel like it was over saturated with celebrity cameos, which ultimately was very distracting. The constant cameos were fun and shocking, but definitely overshadowed the dialogue and punchlines.
My overall rating is 9/10⭐
I think if you go into this film with an open mind and keep it as a stand alone film, this is a fun time and very entertaining!
If you've already seen it what were your thoughts?
